Junction City,
Kansas- The Midwest Titans who returned 6 starters on offense and 6
starters on defense from the 2007 season was pump and ready action on
Saturday June 7, 2008 in Junction City, Kansas. Coming off a 12-4-1
record in 2007, the Mighty Titans got off to a fast start by scoring on
their first offensive possession and their 2 defensive possessions. With
less than 8 minutes left in the 1st quarter, the

Titans found
themselves up by a score of 13-0. The Midwest Titans defensive who is
lead by 2nd year Defensive Coordinator Tim Ellis prove why
they will be a force in the league this year. The Titans defense, also
know as “The Black shirts” shut down the Spartans offense on their
opening drive of the game and forced them to punt from their own 48 yard
line. The offense took over and went to work. Starting QB Eric Hoskins
(Missouri Western University) connected with WR Kellen Long (Olathe
High) on a deep pass play for 68 yrds to set the offense up at 1st
and goal. Two plays later starting FB Karl Harris went over top for the
TD. Extra point was good by 2nd year K/P Matt Witcher (Avila
University).

When the defense took the field for the 2nd
time in the game, starting FS Butch Powell (Lincoln University) pick-
off a Spartan pass and ran it all the way back for a 58 yard TD return.
Extra point was no good by k/p Matt Witcher. “Butch Powell (Lincoln
University) who made a true name for himself at the 2007 All Star Game
is surely becoming one of the NAFL’s top Safeties,” said head Coach
Webb. Powell ended his day with 3 interceptions and 1 TD return.
Veteran Safety Jeff Edwards (Southeast Missouri State University) and 1st
year standout DB DeShawn Goldsmith (Mid-American Nazarene) also got 1
interception each. The Titans De-line and Linebackers shut down the
Spartans running game by holding them under 85 yrds rushing on the day.
With veteran leaders on the field in WR/TE Robert Hall (University of
Tennessee), OL Brian Wheeler (Arkansas State) and OL Tom Younce
(Pleasant Hill High), the Titans continued to put points on the board at
will and ended the night by posting 46, but the surprise of the day came
from rookie back-up TB Jason Houston (Ottawa High) had several runs that
opened the eyes of his coaching staff. “I was not surprise at what I saw
Jason Houston do on Saturday because I have seen the explosive and
toughness that he brings to our backfield in training camp;” said Head
Coach Webb. Also with Touchdowns on the day was starting TB Jay Robinson
(Missouri Western University), WR Kellen Long (Olathe High), WR Maurice
Green (Burlingame High), WR Phenys Rattavong (Washington High), and WR
Kennen Dewberry (Grandview High).

The final score was 53-0 with 6 of those points
coming from a defensive score by the Titans. The guys responded in a
major way by coming out and playing our style of football and that is
using out team speed and exciting each play 110%. We may not have a lot
of size, but we will play with big hearts and beat you with our speed,’
said head Coach Webb. The Midwest Titans start the 2008 season off 1-0
in league play and now is focusing on the
2-1 Dakota Lawdawgs. The Lawdawgs
are coming off a very big win against the Nebraska Wildcats. The Titans
will travel to Sioux Falls, South Dakota on June 28, 2008 for a very
important league game. After going 1-1-1 against each other in 2007,
The Dakota Lawdawgs is licking their chops for the Midwest Titans to
return. The Titans spoiled the Lawdawgs undefeated season and
championship run last year by beating them in the 1st round
of the 2007 playoffs 20-17 in Sioux Falls. Kick-off is set for 4:00pm.
